READ ALL ABOUT IT... ROYAL ULTRA-PORTABLE TYPEWRITER STEALS THE SHOW IN SERIES FINALE!
1963 marked the end of the line for Royal's original ultra-portable Royalite. The final series was manufactured in the Dutch factory and released in time for the holiday season. They called this swan song the ROYALITE '64, and painted it "Sand", making it an instant collector's item and a magnet for the white carpet crowd.
The Royalite design, based on the previous factory tenant's Halberg Traveler, continued to morph into the back half of the sixties with various name and color combos, adopting a raised ribbon cover and an improved* bi-color mechanism (see note below regarding the 1963 version).
Singer (yes, the sewing machine company) commissioned Royal to make arguably the most attractive version - the Singer Scholastic, in teal with gold lettering, sold exclusively at Singer Sewing Machine stores across the United States.
DID YOU KNOW?
A typewriter's typeface, or font, is as important (or more so in the opinion of many) as its looks.
Typeface lends the machine a distinct personality uniquely transferable to the typewriter's owner.
Fact: The plainest machines sometimes have the best typeface.
This particular machine features a very distinctive typeface called Pembrooke, a renaissance font from the 1930s.
Pembrooke, as defined by Royal, is -
“A finely etched modern style that adds impact and legibility to letters and reports.” The font is highly legible and supremely attractive, yielding 10 characters per inch.
Pembrooke reminds this typewriter enthusiast of the artist/writer Ed Gorey. Perhaps it's the same typeface that graced Gorey's 1930s Royal Standard No. 10, who can say? It certainly conveys a bit of Victorian Goth in its serifs, lending it a Gorey-ish air.
This Royalite '64 is best suited for casual to regular use and makes a wonderful first typewriter, mood machine, and of course, a great travel typewriter. Its low profile, compact size and attractive dove grey vinyl attache case lend it a classy, elegant air. The type feel is smooth and untethered for stacking up the word count; the keytops are generous and the machine is intuitive to use for anyone from novice to the experienced typist.

MECHANICS: This machine is in VERY GOOD condition, fully working with one technical issue common to this year's model: The bi-color mechanism - it will not properly function (with a two-color ribbon installed) in the lower case, bottom lever setting. This faulty mechanism was revamped in later models but this one functions best with a solid ribbon and the lever set to the top setting so it may type perfectly in both small and upper case letters. With that in mind, a solid color ribbon has been installed.
The machine was taken down to the frame, thoroughly cleaned, oiled and serviced; typebars have been detailed, platen and feed rollers have been treated to restore grip, and the margin bell works as designed.
COSMETICS: The exterior is in VERY GOOD condition with minor cosmetic blemishes which include light wear along the rear back panel and minute surface scratches, not visible in photos. Original paint is in VERY GOOD condition with no chips, dents or gouges. The exterior was cleaned, waxed and polished and is in near fine condition.
The original vinyl attache case has been repaired where interior minor rips were present. The outer vinyl was treated to restore color and protect the material from staining. The metal closure works as designed and has a nice brassy shine.
