HERE IS A MANUAL TYPEWRITER IN POSSESSION OF GOOD LOOKS & SUPERIOR WRITING CHOPS, the 1959 ADLER PRIMUS made in Western Germany in the 1950s.
This is the second such machine to grace the Teipiadur workbench and its merits and attributes can be summed up thusly: The Primus is an elegant, reliable machine that is extremely pleasant to type on.
An uncommon find in the USA, the ADLER PRIMUS is both a collector's item and a workhorse for prodigious daily use. This PRIMUS comes with a QWERTY keyboard and the writer-preferred Elite type, yielding 12 characters per inch - IDEAL for stacking up the word count.
The PRIMUS is housed in a scratch-resistant, heavy duty composite plastic shell with an easily detachable ribbon cover. The color scheme is a two-toned OYSTER SHELL CREAM and GRAY PUTTY, with plenty of curves and chrome detail to be pleasing to the eye, but not too distracting.
One could write a lifetime of novels on this machine.
Typing on the PRIMUS is an absolute dream - it has a solid feel with a quick staccato keystroke that is deeply satisfying for the precision wordsmith. The Primus is often compared to the Olympia SM series with its large, molar-like keytops and German engineering. It may even surpass the feel of the aforementioned as the Primus requires a less bombastic touch and is noticeably swift, with a silky carriage return and natural key acceleration.
NOTE: If you're after a "quiet" typewriter, look elsewhere - this one is like a beloved rum-soaked auntie, eggnog in hand - she's boisterous but in the best possible way.
Indeed, this machine's noisy banter is motivating AND makes you sound like the world's most productive writer.
As if to make up for all the racket, Adler endowed this machine with the sweetest margin bell this typewriter enthusiast has ever heard, like birdsong across a wintery meadow.
This machine comes with a laminated copy of the user's guide, a NEW Non-Skid Typewriter Pad, and a NEW Black & Red SILK Ribbon will be installed on metal spools during the final inspection prior to shipping.
IDEAL USER: Writers, Poets, Artists, Screenwriters, Short Story Crafters
NOT FOR: Toddlers, Key-choppers or the Digitally Insane
DID YOU KNOW?
For all you typewriter nerds out there, the PRIMUS is a rebranded Triumph Gabriele or Perfekt,
Adler & Triumph having merged in 1957.
These machines were not exported with any great regularity and, when found in the U.S.A., will often have a QWERTZ keyboard layout with German characters and symbols.
If your brain is hardwired to the American keyboard, look for German typewriters with a QWERTY layout, like this one - specifically manufactured for a New York company that imported these beauties in small quantities in the late 1950s.
The ADLER PRIMUS weighs 14.5 pounds on the desktop with its base plate attached - 12 lbs. when free of the base. Its total weight in carrying case is 17.5 and the typewriter measurements at approximately 12" x 11.5 " by 5" Note: it is recommended that the base plate be removed for desktop typing, the machine has a nice set of rubber feet that won't scratch your desired writing space.
