1958 OPTIMA ~ ELITE 3 ~ Working Manual Portable Typewriter w/Case & Brushes

Made in East Germany during the Cold War, this typewriter conjures up images from behind the Wall, covert operations, spy exchanges and perhaps a manifesto or two written on a machine just like this.

This handsome all-metal housed typewriter has the bones of an Olympia and the style of an Erika. The color is original and classified as taupe, with dark chocolate brown keys, knobs and levers, and lots of nice chrome accents. Rounded corners and chunky contoured key tops make for stylish and comfortable typing sessions and the 88-character modern keyboard rivals that of a standard office machine. The Elite 3 has Tabulator and Tab Set/Clear keys smartly located on either side of the space bar. The color change mechanism is operated with a simple finger roll. The extra-long retractable page support makes tracking your page content easy, and the margin bell has the voice of a choir boy.

This machine comes with its original houndstooth hard travel suitcase with the original brushes; a laminated copy of the Optima user's guide, a NEW Non-Skid Typewriter Pad, and a NEW Black & Red inked cotton ribbon.

This machine is highly recommended for the productive writer - the reliability and functionality of this machine cannot be overstated, it is simply one of the finest typewriters money can buy.

IDEAL USER: Writers, Revolutionaries, Screenwriters, Secret Agents

NOT FOR: Children, Key-choppers or the Digitally Insane

This typewriter features a legible, compact style PICA yielding 10 characters per inch. The typing action is smooth and very fast, it has a nimbleness the experienced typist will appreciate. The machine is carriage shifted, but with an unusual lightness that is non-fatiguing.

Optima WAS Olympia until the Cold War separated East and West Germany. Olympia actually owned and produced the Elite model until 1948. Optima Office Machine Works wasn't formed until a court ordered the Olympia company to be split up after WWII. The International Court of Appeals in The Hague allowed Olympia to produce typewriters under the Olympia brand in West Germany and, in Soviet Occupied Erfurt in East Germany, Optima was allowed to produce the same product but under the Optima brand.
