THERE IS NOTHING QUITE SO GLORIOUS as a mid-century uber-curvaceous VOSS DELUXE.
This is a RARE find, a German manufactured Voss Deluxe in lip-staining, WINE RED (with more chrome than a 50s Cadillac and "brains" to boot - see: West German design + mechanics = genius). This is a portable typewriter that is both collector's HOLY GRAIL and writer's MUSE.
Buyer beware, this is a goddess among typewriters and her "come-hither" looks are ridiculous.
DID YOU KNOW?
From a nerd perspective, 1957 was the last year Voss made the "gull-wing" spool covers. Both stylish and functional in that you need not remove the entire top of the machine to change the ribbon, simply give it a little thumb push and each cover lifts to expose the individual right and left spool.
Also, 1957 was the year LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON was released, the now classic film starring Audrey Hepburn and Gary Cooper. Based on the slim novella ARIANE by Claude Anet, the movie screenplay was written by Billy Wilder and raised a few fusty eyebrows with the age discrepancy between co-stars.
If you live in the European Union, these Voss machines are a dime a dozen, but in the U.S.A., they are an occasional find... And should you happen upon one here or there with an original paint job in RED, it's like finding a UNICORN. As a writer or typewriter enthusiast, this is THE ONE. The one that will get you WRITING. The one that makes your COLLECTION truly special.
The IDEAL USER: Writer/Poet, Collector, Screen Writer, Set Decorator, Typewriter Enthusiasts of an appreciative age
NOT FOR: Key Choppers, Sticky-Fingered Toddlers or the Digitally Insane
VOSS typewriters are defined by fine mechanics and a great keystroke - snappy response, dictatorial persona, precise touch, and exquisite alignment. This particular typewriter is a great example of everything fantastic about German mechanics: The bell is birdsong sweet but the typing is VERY authoritative.
The keyboard is comfortable for slim to full-size fingers; keytops are molar-chunky which helps prevent slippage. Alignment is spot on - the letters line up as they should, the typeface is crisp and legible.
This particular machine has been cleaned, serviced and is in VERY GOOD working condition. It is a vintage wonder considering its age: Near-perfect exterior and near-perfect** mechanics. (See note below regarding: VIBRATOR, CARRIAGE LOCK
LOADED LIKE A BAKED POTATO: This 1957 Voss De Luxe comes with EXTRAS including a New non-skid typewriter pad; original dust cover, brush and buffing cloth; additional brand new back-up inked ribbon; and a replacement (newer, less abused than the original) plaid-lined Voss travel case with KEY!
**NOTE: Every typewriter has its quirks. This one features a *hyper vibrator* (and no, that's not your auntie V's secret weapon), this is that little mechanism that raises and lowers the ribbon when typing capital letters or special characters. On this particular machine, the vibrator can cause the ribbon to bunch up when the shift-lock is employed. The simple fix is to simply straighten the ribbon out by hand, it takes 2 seconds, no big deal. The carriage lock on this typewriter does not function but is easily remedied when traveling by moving the manual margin stops to center. (request pics or more information should you deem necessary before purchasing.)
MECHANICALLY: This machine is in EXCELLENT working condition. It has been cleaned and serviced by the seller and is fully functional with no mechanical faults other than that noted above. The platen has been treated to restore its grip. The type bars and keys have been thoroughly detailed, the segment and individual typebars/slugs cleaned and carriage rails lubed. This machine's inner workings have been freed from the tyranny of dust and debris.
COSMETICALLY: This 1957 VOSS DELUXE is in VERY GOOD used/vintage condition. The all-metal exterior is original, the original paint has paint wear (to-the-metal) around the front right and left of the spacebar's frame where it engaged with its case, not uncommon with Voss machines, and visible in the front-facing pictures.
The rear Voss name panel bears imprint marks from the case within the paint, again, unremarkable, but viewable should you wish to enlarge the picture and take note.
All name badges and decals are intact. The chrome detail is ample and lustrous, the keytops are clean and free of stains. The space bar has moderate age-staining which is unremarkable and does not show in pictures.
The original case which caused the paint damage has been swapped out for the 1958 case to protect against further damage. This newer case is in remarkable shape and bears only minor exterior scuff marks conducive to a life well-traveled. It works as designed to protect and lock the machine in place for stability when traveling and has been cleaned and sanitized.
The typeface, or "font", is the eye-pleasing Large PICA No. 51, yielding 10 characters per inch.
This extremely handsome portable makes a stunning addition to any home or office and draws the eye, inspires a higher word count, and thrives under the rigors of daily, regular use.
