1956 Smith Corona CLIPPER - PORTABLE Working Manual Typewriter

If you're in the market for a virus-proof, unhackable writing machine and could give a toss about a glossy exterior, a typewriter from Smith Corona's mid-century Super 5 Series will likely be on your radar.

The Clipper is a writer's machine to be sure: Effortless piano-key action discourages finger and hand fatigue and the thoughtful Touch Regulator helps adjust for the strength and speed of the individual user. As with the entire Super 5 line, the Clipper has great carriage, consistency and alignment. The typeface is the eye-pleasing PICA, yielding 10 characters per inch. The margin bell is bright and cheery and all mechanical features are intuitively easy to use.

Despite its wallflower physique, the Clipper is not without panache.
In all its matte beige glory, the Clipper still manages to exude retro-style with its Speedline curves, hunter green keys and knobs, and subtle chrome detail. The carriage return arm is quite handsome and cleverly hooked to fit one's finger perfectly.

What the CLIPPER lacks in looks and extraneous function - no tabulator and no page supports - it more than makes up for in purposeful utility.

The Clipper's frumpy *rhino* exterior belies interior beauty, namely rock-solid mechanical consistency, a trademark of Smith Corona engineering. Plain though it is, this low-maintenance typewriter is an absolute favorite among writers, poets and the digitally-depressed - in effect, this typewriter does everything in its power NOT TO distract you from your word count goals.

The CLIPPER comes with its original tweed travel case, laminated copy of Smith Corona's 5 Series general user's manual, and a fresh Black and Red cotton ribbon has been installed on metal spools.

PLUS BONUS WRITERLY ITEMS!!! Also included is a NEW non-skid typewriter pad along with an extra NEW Black and Red ribbon and NEW Blue/Red Editor's pencil.

RECOMMENDED FOR: Serious Writers in search of a reliable, consistent typer; great for letter correspondence, poetry, short stories, journalism, manifestos.

THIS IS NOT the best machine for: Hipsters, Narcissists or Tabaholics

The Clippers of the '50s were part of the "Super-5 Line" designed by SCM's brilliant design engineer Joseph P. Bardkoll who was with the company for 40 years.

Collectors like to have one of each of the Super 5, kinda like baseball cards...

Clipper, Sterling, Silent, Silent-Super and the original laptop, the Skyriter

Go ahead, collect them all. They are fantastic machines.

COSMETICALLY: This particular machine is in GOOD used vintage condition.

** Cosmetic imperfections are: There are ink stains on and around the space bar and a slight patina on the paper guide; an almost invisible bleach spot on the ribbon cover, metal discoloration common to vintage machines around the segment and type ring, and wear in the form of very small paint chips on the front left corner of the frame. You can view much of this detail by enlarging pics shown. (You may request additional photos as necessary.) There are no cracks, dents or gouges in the all-metal body/exterior. All decals and name badges are intact. The Smith Corona decal on the backside has blurred somewhat by an overzealous cleaning by a previous owner or possibly golden retriever licking - who can say? (see pic 8 for this detail) It's been cleaned and sanitized just in case of the latter. **

The original Tweed Travel Suitcase is in VERY GOOD used condition. The case bears minor scuffs conducive to a life well-traveled but is otherwise completely functional with a lock-in feature for carrying stability, sturdy handle and working closure. It too has been cleaned and sanitized, while still maintaining a faintly nostalgic "Eau de Grandpa's Attic".

MECHANICALLY: The Clipper is in VERY GOOD condition: All features are in full working order and the platen has been treated to renew its grip. and the interior including type bars and slugs have been cleaned, the mechanics lightly lubed where needed.

This mid-size portable weighs in at 12 lbs. on the desktop, 16.5 lbs. in its case.
The Clipper's measurements are:
12.5" x 12" x 6"

The machine has been cleaned and tested and is in perfect working condition, ready to use upon receipt.

Will I Need To Purchase a Ribbon for my Typewriter

Not right away. Every typewriter sold on Teipiadur comes with a brand new ribbon installed so you may begin typing at once. Generally a ribbon will last for several passes when the ribbon direction-change function is employed, this will give you 1-3 months of regular use and up to a year of light use before you need to buy a replacement. Recommended ribbon suppliers are included in your welcome letter.

Vintage 101

VINTAGE - as applied to typewriters in this shop - means the typewriters are likely older than you, or possibly your parents.

All machines are in USED / PREVIOUSLY OWNED condition, bearing age-related marks + wear conducive to time and use.

Every typewriter sold on Teipiadur has been serviced/restored to full functionality, cleaned, inside and out, polished and listed with accurate notes and pictures depicting any major flaws or discrepancies.

While all typewriters offered for sale are in perfect working condition, expect your typewriter to show some visible signs of age. These are generally a testament to the machine's charm and history, not detractors.
