Script Font ~ 1960 Olympia SM4 *Signature*, Working Manual Portable Typewriter

Sorry, this item has sold.

If your longhand game is something you loath, why not get yourself a cursive typing machine?

This SM4 Signature is not only *desk-sexy* with its Forest Green and Chrome accented all-metal exterior, but also features a script typeface, aka cursive font, that is superbly sophisticated. This is one machine guaranteed to elevate your letter-writing game, inspire your poetic side and get you emoting on a regular basis, also brilliant for personal journaling and correspondence.

BONUS: This typewriter will have a brand new Black SILK ribbon* installed before shipment. If you don't know about the superiority of silk ribbons vs. nylon or cotton it's basically this:

Nylon - good for 340 pages
Cotton - good for 700 pages (cotton holds more ink than nylon but can leave a slight fabric imprint on the page)
Silk - good for 1500 pages, clean imprint, less type slug clogging

*Please Note: The type sample shown in the fourth picture is with a cotton ribbon - it will be swapped out with a fresh silk ribbon prior to shipping during the final inspection.

Designed and manufactured in Germany, the entire Olympia SM line is a favorite among collectors and writers alike. SM's are considered top-of-the-line midsize portables, smartly engineered and attractive on the desktop.

The generously sized key tops are perfectly concave to discourage slippage and also provide a cushy typing experience. The carriage shifted segment requires moderate hand strength but once you are used to it, you appreciate the sturdiness of the design. Everything works on these brilliantly engineered machines and they are an absolute pleasure to use.

SM4's are prized for the ingenious spacebar aligned keyset tabulator - the set and clear tab keys are located on either side of the spacebar - downright revolutionary at the time of production and still appreciated by the typosphere today. Other ultra-hip features include extendable page support and touch regulator, which is marvelous for personalized adjustment to the individual user's strength, stamina and touch.

The Olympia factory was originally located in what became Soviet-occupied Germany - remember THE WALL? So Olympia's top man scooted out the back door, designs tucked under his arm, and relocated to the Westside. Olympia continued production in Wilhelmshaven, while the original factory continued production under the rebranded Optima name.

Cold War Olympia's are often compared to Mercedes Benz's, while Optimas share an association with the lowly tractor. It's a classic example of capitalism vs. socialism name-calling.

If you're a collector, it's worth getting your hands on one of each and conducting your own analysis. (This typewriter enthusiast personally loves a good Optima.)

Mechanically LOADED with all the features one expects from a full-size standard typewriter, the SM4 easily surpasses most machines in its class. Its touch is super-fast and smooth, the mechanics have a comforting heavy solidity, and stylistically it's a machine that will own your desk. Beware - your laptop will be jealous.

COSMETICALLY: The SM4's exterior is in VERY GOOD condition. The paint is crinkle matte textured and all metal with no dents or gouges. All name badges and decals are intact. The original 2-toned travel suitcase is in VERY GOOD condition with minimal scuff marks and a working closure. It too has been cleaned and sanitized and functions perfectly.

MECHANICALLY: This machine is in EXCELLENT mechanical condition. The platen has been treated to refresh its grip, mechanics have been cleaned, tested and lubed where needed and all functions are in full working order.
