Whether you’ve just joined or recently renewed your membership to the Typosphere, the search for freshly inked typewriter ribbon is REAL.
And just WHAT IS THE BEST RIBBON for you and your machine? Read the tutorial below to learn more or, skip all this and go straight for the honeypot.
GOLDILOCKS & THE THREE RIBBONS
There is some disparity out there amongst ribbon suppliers:
Some ribbons are too heavily inked and messy in the transfer of pigment to page.
Cotton and Nylon ribbons especially are often over-inked and, for initial pages of type, sloppy and illegible.
With Nylon sometimes you’ll see ink-bleeding - Black ink bleeds into Red, or vice verse - creating a not-unpleasant “vintage look” but one that will drive the perfectionist mad.
Silk ribbon is tricky to get right and can be inconsistent.
When too little ink is applied to Silk, a brand new ribbon can have an anemic imprint from start to finish.
In short, the typewriter enthusiast is looking for the *Goldilocks Effect* and has every right to find it (in all three materials) when shopping for ribbon.
After weeks of (borderline obsessive) testing, the Teipiadur Workshop has sourced the very best ribbons in each category, embodying the most desirable qualities from America’s premium typewriter ribbon suppliers. The result is the following CONNOISSEURS SELECTION = Premium Typewriter Ribbon available all in one place, only at TEIPIADUR:
NYLON: Judiciously inked, minimal bleed, and consistent in imprint from vibrant start to early fade. An excellent choice for beginners, casual users, and the economically-minded and adequate for all general-purpose typing.
NYLON ALL-BLACK 10 Yards General Purpose, good for @ 250-350 pages
NYLON BLK & RED 10 Yards General Purpose, good for @ 250-350 pages
COTTON: Generously inked, vibrant and bold with a persistent imprint and benevolent lifespan. A great choice for artists and vintage purists.
COTTON ALL-BLACK 10 Yards General Purpose good for @ 600-700 pages
COTTON BLK & RED 10 yards General Purpose, good for @ 600-700 pages
SILK: Perfectly inked, long-lasting, clean and dependable imprint from start to finish. The highest quality typewriter ribbon for perfectionists and the "writer's choice".
SILK ALL-BLACK 12 Yards General Purpose good for @ 900-1200 pages
SILK BLK & RED 12 yards General Purpose, good for @ 900-1200 pages
Each ribbon is cut to size in the Teipiadur workshop, wound onto a single spool, packaged in a ziplock plastic sleeve, and tucked into a preservation tin. Ribbons will come with eyelets installed unless otherwise requested. (Olympia users for example will likely prefer ribbon without the eyelets.)
****Should you desire a ribbon “No Eyes”, please message Sam at the time of your order.
ALL ORDERS ARE SHIPPED NEXT BUSINESS DAY VIA PRIORITY MAIL to get FRESH RIBBON to you FAST!
The intent of this packaging ***1/2” ribbon on a single, disposable plastic spool*** is that the user will wind the ribbon onto the existing spools in their machine of choice. A handy basic instructional laminated card is included for this purpose but DO keep in mind, different machines may require a variation on ribbon changing based on mechanics - always refer to your typewriter’s user instructions first and foremost when installing a new ribbon.
And if you’re looking for a custom cut ribbon for smaller spools, please message Sam for availability and pricing.

Consider the following tutorial as a "bluebook" for the typewriter enthusiast on the hunt for premium typewriter ribbon.
DID YOU KNOW?
The BIG THREE ribbon materials used by today's typewriter ribbon companies are NYLON, COTTON and SILK. During WW1 when Cotton was at a premium for flags, uniforms, and tents, typewriter ribbon companies turned to Silk. By the time WW2 rolled around and Silk was in high demand for parachutes, Nylon was substituted and remains an economic staple in the Typosphere today.
SO, WHAT'S THE 411?
The differences are subtle but important in helping one understand which ribbon is best for what purpose AND aesthetic.
Think of it like Car Shopping. What’s most important to you when choosing a car, or in this case, ribbon?
- Is it practicality and economy?
- Do you prefer the flash & torque of a muscle car?
Yo, Cotton, I'm talking to you.
- Or is it the luxury of understated elegance and clean lines you're after?
Silk = Posh
- Do you want to rent (Nylon), lease (Cotton), or buy (Silk)?
LET'S KICK THE TIRES...
NYLON = @ 250-350 pages of double-spaced type, depending on your tolerance for “the fade".
A non-absorbant material, the ink rests on the surface of Nylon and the more you type the more you notice a gradual fade-out on the page. The material is strong and durable and can take a heavy-handed user without sustaining punctures and tears. Nylon is excellent for general purpose use, widely available from large online retailers, and the most affordable of the three.
RECOMMENDED USER/TYPEWRITER: Newbies, the Casual User, Recipe Typers
Good ALL-PURPOSE ribbon for any typewriter but especially late model machines made from the 1960s to 1980s, ie. if your typewriter is housed in plastic, it will appreciate a no-frills Nylon ribbon.
COTTON = @ 600-700 pages of DS type
Cotton is often preferred by purists and collectors in the Typosphere who consider it to be the "authentic" choice for vintage typewriters.
Cotton absorbs gallons of ink, the efficiency is easily double that of Nylon, but the material, while more dense, is also prone to tears and punctures, especially from users who strike keys with considerable force.
The extra inky, extra vibrant imprint from Cotton is generally the boldest of the three - audacious with a *tinted window* effect.
The Cotton signature is striking in mixed media projects, looks especially bold and visually appealing on heavyweight, handmade textured papers, and is, therefore, the “Artist’s Darling”.
RECOMMENDED USER/TYPEWRITER: Artists, Purists, Old-School Typewriter Veterans, Zinemakers
The extra dark, inky, vibrant imprint of Cotton ribbon is terrific for older machines; the smudge effect enhances the typewriter's vintage imprint. Cotton ribbon is most legible with a larger typeface like PICA, whereas with ELITE pitch, or small typeface, it can blur or clump, the smaller characters clogged with ink - anything with a loop - your a’s, b’s, d’s, p’s, and o’s - can come across “blacked out”. NOTE: Regular type slug “dry-brushing” following each type session will help alleviate this problem. Cotton is especially pleasing to the eye with sans-serif typeface, regardless of pitch size.
SILK = @ 900-1200 pages of DS type depending on how much ribbon is on the spool. Silk is the thinnest material of the three, durable and long-lasting, and absorbs ink VERY well, imparting the cleanest imprint on the page.
A Silk ribbon imprint, while slightly less vibrant than Cotton, is uniquely consistent throughout the ribbon’s lifespan. Of all materials, Silk ribbon properly inked, does not clog type slugs, which is wonderful if you want a low-maintenance typing experience. Silk ribbons are the "Writer's Choice" and work well with all pitch and typefaces, providing an especially crisp signature with the smallest ELITE type.
RECOMMENDED USER/TYPEWRITER: Writers, Poets, Perfectionists, Letter Correspondents
This is the serious WRITER's go-to for durability, longevity, and legible type. Silk = Maximum words on the page and more time between ribbon changing and type slug cleaning. Silk ribbon works especially well on those machines with very small type - think Smith Corona Silent with 13cpi or Hermes typewriters with extra-small ELITE type.
As always, thanks for visiting TEIPIADUR, stay safe out there and type off the grid.
